Ukrainian Christmas carols

Carols are performed by carolers - groups of people who go around every house with bags for goodies. However, if in the eastern regions of Ukraine carolers walk with a Christmas star, then in Western Ukraine – with a live or puppet nativity scene, presenting theatrical scenes on the theme of Christmas.

Previously, the group of carolers had its own classification according to "positions": Berezai or Birch was the head of the procession; latkov collected sausages, balykas and lard; the voter-treasurer kept records of money; the bread-bearer "was in charge" of cakes, bread and pampushki; the star carried the Christmas star. In addition, the crowd of carolers was accompanied by dancers, violinists, bell ringers, trembits and soloists who performed carols.
Girls and boys caroled separately, and each group had its own special festive attributes and rules. In Western Ukraine, very adult men and church employees also caroled: the money and food they collected were distributed as alms to those who needed help.
It is noteworthy that the traditions of caroling are still preserved in Ukraine. However, if earlier caroling lasted for several days, until there were no "not covered" houses in the settlement, now Ukrainians caroling only on the night before Christmas. Nevertheless, as before, the group of carolers is joined by mummers depicting a Goat, Shepherds, King Herod, Death and Jews - the main characters of biblical stories. In the evening before Christmas, small groups of children go to apartments and houses and sing-caroling. And on the morning of January 14, that is, on the old New Year, they also go and sprinkle grain in the houses and sing again, but already shchedrivki and posevalki - verses dedicated to the Venerable Melania and Basil.
In addition to private houses and apartments, grain is often sprinkled in official state institutions. For example, in banks on January 14, men pass through all departments and sprinkle wheat everywhere. Employees then find it in computers, printers and even in their clothes! But you can't throw away such grain! Custom stipulates that the festive wheat must either be preserved until the next year, or sown into the ground.

As before, on Christmas holidays, girls are guessing at marriage, because Yuletide is the best time to find out their fate.
And in the Christian world, Christmas is celebrated primarily by charity: alms are distributed to everyone and do not forget about animals – after all, it was the donkey and the ox that warmed the baby Jesus on the night of birth. For birds, they put up a rye sheaf and hang feeders so that they do not suffer from cold and hunger.

The tradition of arranging Christmas trees with the distribution of gifts is rooted in the deep past, but it is based on the same love for one's neighbor.

There are many folk signs associated with Christmas. So, for example, if a lot of snow falls by the holiday, then you can expect a good harvest of bread and thick herbs. And if in the first three days of Christmas the trees stand in fluffy frost, then there will be a rich harvest of grain. It is believed that a warm Christmas is for a cold spring, and if the Christmas sky is strewn with a scattering of stars, there will be a lot of berries.
