For many, Christmas is the most important holiday of the year. Christmas is a time of magic and miracles associated not only with the birth of Jesus Christ and the arrival of Santa Claus, but also with many long-standing traditions and interesting facts. Surely they will interest not only children, but also adults. Moreover, many of the traditions are followed even by modern adults and their children. And in this regard, I have prepared several facts about this holiday.
1. The Bible does not specify the exact date of birth of the son of God, Jesus Christ. December 25 was officially recognized as his birthday only in 320 AD by the then Bishop of Rome, Pope Julius I.
2. The idea of the Christmas flight of Santa Claus in a team with flying reindeer originated with the famous American writer Washington Irving, which he presented to the public in his work in 1819.
3. Initially, the Christmas tree was associated with the tree of paradise, so at first it was decorated not with Christmas toys, but with fresh flowers and fruits.
4. The Paradise apple was the prototype of the first glass ball for the Christmas tree.
5. The tallest in the history of Christmas was a beautiful fir tree, which was installed on the main square of Seattle back in 1950. The Guinness Book of Records states that it was as high as 66 meters.
6. An interesting fact about Christmas indicates that there was a period in the USA when the celebration of Christmas was strictly prohibited (1658-1681). The then government of the country forced people to consider Christmas a celebration completely unrelated to Christianity.
7. The Christmas wreath is a reminder of the crown of thorns that Jesus wore in the last hours of his life. Red berries and other decorative elements of this color are like drops of blood shed by Jesus wounded by thorns. And red is also love. White (candles, ribbons; sometimes supplemented or replaced with silver) – purity of the soul. The round shape of the wreath and the branch of the evergreen tree used for it mean eternal life, the continuity of generations. The golden decor is a symbol of the victory of good over evil, sunlight, strength, power and well-being.
