On January 6, Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas Eve. This name comes from a special dish made from wheat, nuts and honey - sochiva.

Christmas Eve is the highest stage on the road to the holiday. A particularly strict fast is established on this day. If you follow it according to all the rules, then you can eat only once - after Vespers, when a lighted candle will be brought out to the middle of the temple, which symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem. Previously, this service was performed on the day before Christmas. Nowadays, Christmas Eve is served, as a rule, on the morning of January 6th, together with the Liturgy.

Christmas Eve Traditions

There are a number of traditions for the evening before Christmas. Christmas Eve is spent with the family - on this day it is not customary to visit.

You should in your soul forgive all your enemies and ask for forgiveness from those people whom you may have offended.

Also, you cannot work on this day. All important things had to be done on January 5th.

However, the main events of Christmas Eve took place in the temple.

Signs on Christmas Eve

The signs were used to judge the future harvest. If the day is clear, vegetables in the garden and wheat in the field will be born. At the same time, a blizzard was also considered a good sign and foreshadowed the honey harvest. If by this day the paths were black, there will be a harvest for buckwheat, and the frost on the trees foreshadowed the harvest of grain.
