id: 10037854

It is believed that on the feast of Epiphany, water in reservoirs acquires healing properties, so it is customary to consecrate it, as well as bathe in it. What is the history and tradition of this ritual?
The Feast of Epiphany also has another popular name: Jordan. Indeed, on this day, the Baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist on the Jordan River took place. During this ceremony, the waters of the Jordan River were sanctified by Jesus Cross. Since then, it has been customary to sanctify water at Epiphany. There is also a tradition to dive into an ice hole or go into the water in any body of water in order to cleanse yourself with healing water on this day.
In Ukraine, bathing at Epiphany was not as massively popular as, for example, the rite of blessing water, but over time it gained gained popularity.
It is believed that bathing at Epiphany “washes away” sins and hardens the body. Usually, bathing takes place in specially designated places: in an ice hole, which is punched in advance (often in the form of a large cross).
Immerse yourself in water for only a few seconds, three times, you do not need to immerse your head in water.

May the holy Epiphany water wash away all your troubles and sorrows, and after the holiday your life will follow the path that easily leads to well-being, peace and happiness!
Let it be warm and cozy in your house, it will be sunny and joyful in your family, and it will be clear and light in your soul!
