The diversity of Ukrainian Easter customs is associated not only with the antiquity of this holiday, but also with the pluralism of the cultural values of Ukrainians. Living in different parts of Ukraine, people create and adhere to unique traditions that are usually unique to their region.
Christians always carefully and attentively prepare for Easter, therefore, in the treasury of our culture, not only customs relating exclusively to this great day have been preserved, but also pre-Easter rituals that are performed long before the Resurrection of Christ.
For example, in the Hutsul region, even on Good Monday, children specially visit their godparents and the elderly, announcing that Easter will come soon. For such good news, children are presented with sweets and kukuts - buns with baked crosses. Also on the night from Good Tuesday to Great Wednesday, a rite of burning an effigy took place, which was called "Warm the grandfather." The fire in this ritual is of great importance, because it symbolizes the purification of the soul.
In Polissya, an interesting ritual is followed, the central figure of which is a barrel. However, the tub should be unusual, namely the one in which the dough is kneaded for pasta. They wash it, cover it with a towel, tie it with a red ribbon, put money on top of it and put it on the gate posts to raise it higher to the sky. They believe that when the sun rises, it will bless the barrel with its rays and, accordingly, all the pasques, the dough for which will be kneaded in it.
Sometimes Christian customs are intertwined with pagan ones and a rather interesting tandem is obtained. For example, in the Severshchina, on Sunday after mass and a festive breakfast, it is customary to collect consecrated food leftovers and carry them to the nearest reservoir. This is done in order to feed the mermaids. It is important to carry out such a ceremony before 12:00 noon.
In Transcarpathia, the tradition of burning stingrays (tires) is still popular. On the eve of Easter, on Saturday, people gather near the church and burn gasoline-covered tires. It is believed that as many tires as possible should be collected from each village.
This custom is typical not for the entire Transcarpathia, but for its individual regions - Mukachevo, Irshav and Khust. Traditions remain traditions, but if they harm the environment, then they should be avoided. In the process of burning tires, a very large amount of hazardous substances enters the air, which can further lead to an environmental disaster.
The night before Easter is considered magical. Our ancestors believed that during it you can find treasures. You had to take a red Easter egg in your hand, go along the road, and when it starts to heat up in your palm, then you should stop and dig in that place.
Many customs concern pysanky. In some regions of Galicia, especially in the Yavoriv region, a tradition has been preserved in which a group of guys should go to the houses of married girls. Under the windows of the yards, the guys sang drawing songs - "ryndzivki". An interesting feature was that walking and singing were allowed only at night. Unable to withstand such "concerts", the hostesses brought out to the guys a few Easter eggs or a few small coins.
Even in ancient times, people lit fires near churches and made sure that they did not go out. An interesting tradition with a bonfire was arranged in the village of Chertovets, on Pokuttya. A bonfire was laid out under the local church, where various rubbish was burned, and when the fire flared up brighter, the guys became around it. This created the illusion of a biblical episode when the apostles warmed themselves by the fire, waiting for Jesus.
