World turtle day

There is a holiday - World Turtle Day, which is celebrated annually on May 23. It originated in 2000 at the initiative of the American Turtle Rescue Society (American Tortoise Rescue). This organization was founded by enthusiasts in 1990 in Malibu. The main task of the members of the society was to preserve the population of turtles living in the vicinity of the city.
The purpose of the holiday is to draw public attention to the problem of the death of a large number of turtles due to proximity to people. On this day, actions are held in all habitats of turtles, during which volunteers help animals: they make crossings under busy highways in places of migration or in other places dangerous for animals. Also, the participants of the actions seek the status of legally protected territories for the places of laying eggs.

Every year the holiday is gaining popularity. Now Turtle Day is celebrated not only in those corners of the globe where these animals are found, but also in many other countries of the world. The celebration includes masquerades dressed as turtles with funny scenes from the life of animals, dances of turtles and sending funny postcards with their image.
Everything in nature is interconnected. Leatherback turtles and hawksbill help control jellyfish and sponge populations. Green sea turtles eat seagrass, which must be low for many species of fish to breed in it. That is why it is very important to protect each species and save turtles from extinction.
Turtles appeared on Earth long before people, and since then they have not changed so much. They live both on land and in water, and if aquatic turtles prefer fresh rivers and lakes, then others prefer salty seas and oceans. Be that as it may, these creatures are truly amazing. And our task is to preserve their population, to help these mysterious and amazing creatures not to perish after the dinosaurs.
