The greatest contribution to the spread of rumors about fire-stomping rhinos was made by the stories of travelers who settled for the night in the middle of the savannah, where the rhinos live. The fact is that in the natural habitat, the rhinoceros has no enemies. Even adult lions are unlikely to cope with a multi-ton “machine” capable of accelerating to a speed of 45 km / h. But at the same time, the rhinoceros, the storm of the savannas, is very afraid of people and tries to stay away from them. Add to this the fact that rhinos are especially active at night, but at the same time they do not have very good eyesight. The glow of the fire, which is clearly visible in the dark, attracts a curious animal that runs headlong towards it. But as soon as the rhinoceros is at the fire and realizes that there are people around, the animal begins to panic. The rhinoceros begins to run in circles, trampling down everything that comes under its feet, including the fire. People who are also in a panic may think that the animal is trying to deliberately trample the fire, although the rhinoceros does not even think about it. Thus, perhaps, this misconception was born.
