Noteworthy is the state border between Baarle-Hertog and the Dutch commune of Baarle-Nassau, which passes through quarters and individual houses and divides Baarle-Hertog into 24 separate sections - the main settlement, 20 exclaves surrounded by the territory of the Netherlands and three sections adjacent to the Belgian territory. Seven Dutch exclaves are inside Belgian territory (inside the main settlement and the largest exclave). The situation where individual houses are cut by the state border arose when, according to Dutch law, restaurants were required to close early. Then the owners of restaurants began to be located on the border, during the "closure" moving customers to tables on the Belgian side.
Such a complex border arose as a result of many years of transactions between the rulers of Breda and the dukes of Brabant, related to the difference in legislation. The border was fixed by the Maastricht Treaty of 1843.
