On August 23, the day before Independence Day, Ukrainians celebrate State Flag Day. Before the war, celebrations in honor of the holiday were all over Ukraine.
Blue and yellow colors symbolized the Kievan state even before the Christianization of Russia. They were present on almost all coats of arms of cities, as well as on the coats of arms of princes during the Middle Ages and the Kingdom of Rus (Galicia-Volyn principality) in the XIV century.
In honor of the Day of the State Flag of Ukraine, flags of record sizes are often raised, launched or opened in different regions.
Last year, on the eve of the Day of the State Flag of Ukraine in Kyiv, on the Pechersk Hills, near the Motherland, the largest Ukrainian flag was raised. The height of its flagpole is about 90 meters, the size of the flag is 16 × 24 meters.
On August 24, before the war, there was always a festive parade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the central street of the capital, which symbolized the strength of our independence. In addition to the military parade on the occasion of the Independence Day of Ukraine on August 24, there were often concerts, fairs, a lot of fun, and this day was always a day off!
