What does red mean in psychology
id: 10041739

Feelings caused by red are diverse and contradictory. It can be associated with joy, beauty, love and greatness, causing positive emotions in a person. But we must not forget that red is also the color of blood and fire. Therefore, it also causes negative associations, such as danger, risk and threat. In people who have experienced certain shocks, it may be associated with an accident, an accident, physical violence, or even war.

In a striking way, the color red combines such diverse associations. Therefore, it is actively used to convey emotions or additional meaning in pictures, symbols and on all kinds of warning signs. In some cases, they denote life, joy or love, and in others - danger, physical pain or even hatred.

Psychologists identify three main aspects of the influence of red on our psyche:

Excitation. Red color is exciting in every sense. In the right setting, it can enhance romantic and sexual experiences. It can also make a person quick-tempered and irritable, provoke a quarrel or a fight. Therefore, psychologists recommend not to overdo it with red elements in the interior. For example, red linen for a marital bed is not the best option, but for dressing gowns and underwear “for special occasions”, this color is quite suitable.
Tonic effect. Red color makes a person more active, energetic and efficient. This can be used if you need to quickly tone yourself up to get important work done. However, this effect does not last long, and after a while the energy is replaced by fatigue, the person becomes nervous and irritable. Therefore, the red color is not suitable for decorating the workplace (this also applies to the wallpaper on the computer desktop).
Increasing mindfulness. Red color helps a person to concentrate, briefly making him more attentive and receptive. This may be because it is associated with fire or blood. In addition, red is the most visible color, so it is always used for various warning elements.
These effects are inherent in the human psyche and are not the result of upbringing or a certain life experience. They manifest themselves to the same extent in all people, regardless of the cultural environment in which they grew up. Interestingly, even primates and some other higher mammals have the same reactions to red.
