Ecstasy of blessed ludovica albertoni
id: 10048836

Blessed Albertoni is depicted in a state of religious ecstasy, waiting for the descent of the Holy Spirit. According to one version, Bernini in this work combined the theme of the trenody, characteristic of tombstones, with the theme of the immaculata.
The sculpture is made of marble of different colors: the figure is made of white Carrara marble, the cover of the sarcophagus is made of red with white veins. The figure of Ludovica Albertoni is presented at the moment of mystical communication with God. The folds of her clothes are made extremely naturalistic, but they reflect the state of confusion of the blessed one, her head is thrown back, her eyes are half closed. Marble is processed so skillfully that it seems as if it is shrouded in a light haze and creates a “light vibration”, sfumato. Bernini in this work reaches the pinnacle of baroque illusionism, heavy marble turns into a mystical vision. In the words of the sculptor, uttered in connection with another work: "The Ecstasy of St. Teresa" in the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, but also suitable for this occasion, Bernini "made the marble flexible like wax" and in this way was able to "to a certain extent unite the sculpture with painting"
