There are many traditions and customs of celebrating Christmas abroad. For example, in rural areas, hundreds of candles are lit in windows on the night before Christmas. Thus, for local residents, Christmas Eve is also a "night of candles". This tradition originated from the ancient ritual of burning a Christmas log, which symbolized the victory of light over darkness.
Another tradition that the foreign people honor during this holiday is the tradition of decorating houses with evergreens. Mistletoe, ivy and holi are especially popular. According to custom, once a year men have the right to kiss any girl who stops under the mistletoe. Since this happens infrequently, it was decided to hang mistletoe over the mirror, because girls stop there much more often to admire themselves.
The most important part of foreign Christmas is, of course, the festive dinner. For many centuries, the inhabitants of Britain served plum porridge or plum pudding on this night. This is a special oatmeal dish cooked in broth, which is served with raisins, almonds, prunes and honey. Traditionally, four objects were hidden in this pudding — a coin, a thimble, a button and a ring. The coin signified wealth, the button and thimble signified bachelor and unmarried life, while the ring predicted young girls to marry.
In this and other original country there are many other traditions associated with the exchange of gifts, sending postcards, singing carols and decorating the Christmas tree. All these traditions are regularly observed from year to year and passed on to future generations. So I hope that the dream of holding a holiday not in my Ukraine will come true soon! It is important to know the cultures of the world and honor them!
