On January 6, the Holy Evening is traditionally celebrated, an obligatory attribute of which is 12 fasting dishes on the table. There are two versions of the interpretation of this number: according to one, it is the number of apostles, and according to the other, the number of months in one year. The main one among them is "rich kutya" - boiled wheat or barley with honey and other plant ingredients. From the evening of January 6, it is customary to carol with a big star in the hands: carolers sing Christmas carols. Boys and girls prepare special songs and poems that they take from house to house, entertaining their neighbors in exchange for sweet gifts and coins. It is believed that the more carolers come to the house, the more abundance and wealth the family will have during the coming year.
Also, in Ukraine, fortune telling is customary on this day. Even today, girls in Ukraine are fortune-telling in order to find out whether they will get married and the name of the future groom.
