The Golden Gate is a fortress tower with a wide (up to 7.5 m) passage. Powerful pylons protrude inside the passage, on which the arches of the vault rested. The height of the preserved walls reaches 9.5 meters. The gates were made of stone, due to the fact that special importance was attached to this structure. They were built using the technique of mixed masonry, known since the time of Ancient Rome: layers of stones were interspersed with leveling rows of plinths. The decorative features of the masonry are well read on the front surface of the walls.
The Gate Church of the Annunciation crowned the Gate so that every traveler approaching Kyiv could see that this is a Christian city. During the restoration work, the gate church was recreated as a four-pillar one-domed temple with apses sunk into the thickness of the wall, not protruding from the total volume of the facade. Brick ornaments, characteristic of the art of that period, were used as an architectural decoration. During the archaeological research of the Golden Gate, smalt cubes, fragments of fresco plaster were found, which indicates that the ancient church was decorated with frescoes and mosaics.
