This fantastic Ukrainian lived for 113 years.
One hundred and thirteen, Karl.
For military merits at the age of 80, he received the rank of lieutenant general. But after the decision of the Russian tsarina to liquidate the Zaporizhzhya Army, the gallant soldier was imprisoned.
And not just imprisoned, but sent for life to Solovki, to the monastery-prison of the same name.
And he was then 86 years old. At the same time, they kept him in inhumane conditions so that he would die sooner and everyone would forget about him. And he still did not die.
When he was transferred from one casemate to another, "more than two arshins of dirt remained in the cell. After being in prison for such a long time, he became wild, became gloomy and lost his sight; he, like a beast, grew big nails, a long beard and all his clothes on him, the caftan with buttons fell into rags and fell from his shoulders.
When he was 110 years old, the new king issued a decree pardoning him.
But he had nowhere to go, so he stayed at the monastery.
Because he has already spent almost a quarter of a century in its walls.
He was buried in the main courtyard of the Solovetsky Monastery at the age of 113.
In Ukraine, streets, memorial signs, silver commemorative coins and even military units are named after him.
In 2008, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate canonized him.
