Traditions and taboos on St. Nicholas Day:

According to an old Ukrainian tradition, on St. Nicholas Day, the most respected people in the village got together and brewed wheat beer for the holiday. A big supper was arranged (but with Lenten dishes on the table), after which the festivities began. On this day, children were given special cookies - nikolaychiks.

An important rule was considered to be sure to distribute debts before the end of Nicholas Day, otherwise you can call the need and lack of money into the house next year.

They believed that if you do not take care of the poor or orphans on this holiday, then you will suffer losses for 7 years.

It is also customary to reconcile and forgive. There is even such a saying: "To Nikolai, call a friend, call an enemy, both will be friends."

The main signs on St. Nicholas Day:

If the trees on St. Nicholas are covered with frost, then in the summer there will be a good harvest;

If by December 19 the roads will be covered with snow, the winter will be cold and protracted;

If it rains on this day, winter crops will be born well;

How much snow fell on the winter Nikolai - the same amount of grass will be on the spring Nikolai (May 22).
