Why is the Christmas tree decorated for the New Year?
In fact, the custom of putting up a Christmas tree for the New Year and decorating it came to us from Western Europe. Prior to this, Russians simply put trees on the street, believing that they attract evil spirits, so it is not safe to install them in the house.

The Germans, who lived in St. Petersburg in the 19th century, showed the Russian nobles that the spruce should be hung upside down, and not placed on the floor and certainly not on the street. So they organized entertainment for children, who had to pick the hanging sweets from the tree.

In 1840, the first Christmas tree markets began to appear in Russia, where you could buy decorations for the Christmas tree - rings, ribbons and beads. Since then, people have been transforming trees not only in the apartment, but also on the streets - in the main city squares, in parks and courtyards.
