The tradition of singing Christmas carols appeared in pagan times, and it is connected with the cult of the Sun, with the day of the winter solstice, which our ancestors called the Christmas Carol holiday. Kolyada is the ancient Ukrainian goddess of the sky, the mother of the Sun.
According to legend, every year on the longest night of winter, Kolyada gives birth to Bozhich - a new Sun. The birth of Kolyada takes place on Earth. But Mara does not want the new Sun to appear and pursues her. Therefore, the goddess transforms into a goat so that Mara does not recognize her.
Hence the tradition of dressing up as this animal during Christmas carols.
And this is my Christmas Motanka Goat.
The goat is a symbol of well-being and fertility:
Where the goat walks, there it will give birth to rye,
Where it does not happen, there it lies...
How do you like my goat????
