When to be generous
Ukrainians celebrate a generous evening on January 13th. It's the eve of the Old New Year. On this day, it is customary to go to the neighbors' houses, sing generous songs and wish the owners a "generous new year."
Each shchedrivka is filled with the wishes of a "full cup" in everything. And in order to be generous to fate, the owners should prepare goodies and money that they give to generous guests.
It is believed that not letting generous people into the house - to troubles and losses for a whole year.
In pre-Christian times, this evening they honored the Month, which was associated with the harvest. The main characters of the action are Malanka and Vasily, personifying the sister of the Month and the hero who saved her from the monster Snake.
Who can not sing generous
Only young guys (boys and girls) go to sing ritual songs - children and the older generation stay at home.
According to customs, the ceremony can be accompanied by songs, dances, dressing up with masks and skits.
When Ukrainians sow (sow)
Sowed on the Old New Year, that is, January 14th. It is customary to do this from the very morning, and preferably before sunrise, because the very first sower is traditionally given the richest gifts.
Sowers bring grain into the house, scatter it on the floor, while singing a sowing song or reciting a rhyme.
Grain cannot be harvested before sunset. It is believed that the more seeders come to the house, the better the new year will be. Of course, the performers of the rite should be rewarded with money or goodies.
Who should not sow
It has long been believed among the people that women should not participate in the ceremony - only boys or men. A male representative should enter the house first, this, according to legend, will bring abundance and wealth for the next year.
What kind of grain is sown
As a rule, these are cereals: rye, barley and wheat. The grain with which the house was sown was considered its amulet.
It is important that the grain for sowing must be whole. It is impossible to sow with round grain: peas, millet and millet. It is believed that this will bring tears to the house.
Let us add that in some regions of Ukraine it is customary to be generous and sow on Epiphany on January 18-19 (it is considered the third Christmas holiday) in the second round.
