On the eve of St. Basil's Day, which is celebrated on January 14, people are generous in Ukraine, it is customary to sow on Vasily's day. For the holiday, it is customary to cook a generous kutya and guess. According to signs, on this day at home, you must definitely have a cash reserve and not lend. On this day, housewives baked cookies, shaped like livestock or birds. Many had pork dishes on the table. In the morning, each member of the family tried to get up earlier than the others and go to the well, spring or river, draw water and wash it. It was believed that whoever did this would be healthy and cheerful all year.
The custom of leading the Goat to Vasily from January 13 to 14 is a mystical act that has come to us since pre-Christian times. The goat itself was made from a wooden stick, one of the ends of which split into horns. The horns were decorated: they tied wooden spoons - goat's ears. On the opposite side of the stick, they hooked a goat's tail and dressed it in an old casing with the fur up. The sleeves of the casing had to hang down - these are the "legs" of the goat.
►The one who was chosen as the "goat" crawls under the casing, holds on to the decorated stick with one hand and twists the "tail".
►In addition to the "goat", the company chooses a "cat" for the evening - usually the youngest guy from the group. The duties of the "cat" include carrying a bag, meowing and asking for fat.
►The action starts at nightfall. Children come to any house and ask: "Let me in the house, the goat is frozen!".
►The owner refuses three times, and the children ask again.
►After this, the goat and the generous people sing, the cat meows and asks for fat. During this time, the goat allegedly dies and comes to life.
►After three traditional refusals, the hostess still treats the cat with bacon, the goat breeder with a pie, and the treasurer of the group with money.
►After being generous, the youth gather together in the same house and continue to have fun.

According to church traditions, January 13 is the day of St. Melania (IV-V century). Melania was born into a Christian family, very rich and respected. When she was 14 years old, she was given in marriage to the guy Apinian, who also came from a noble family. This young family used all their property to help those in need. After many years of charitable deeds, Melania settled on the Mount of Olives, and subsequently a monastery was founded there. Reverend Melania had two children. The second birth was very difficult, and the boy who was born soon died. Therefore, the saint is often prayed during difficult childbirth.
