The Old New Year is always celebrated on the night of January 13-14. This holiday appeared after people realized that the Julian calendar was inaccurate.

After the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, the New Year began to be celebrated on January 1. However, the Orthodox Church refused to switch to the new calendar. This is how the Old New Year was born.

Currently, the difference between the Julian and Gregorian calendar is 13 days, but in the future it will increase.

The Old New Year is celebrated between two big church dates - the Day of Remembrance of St. Melania (January 13) and the Day of Remembrance of Basil the Great (January 14).

Therefore, on January 13, Ukrainians gather as a family for a Generous Evening and prepare a magnificent feast. Advent has already ended, so you can try dishes from meat, butter and even alcohol. Kutya is considered the main decoration of the table.

Before dinner, children and youth go from house to house and are generous. And the owners give them money or sweets for this. So people wish each other health and abundance in the new year, and also envelop the house with positive.

In some regions, boys and girls drive a goat, play Malanka, are generous with masks, etc.

But after family gatherings, the girls used to love to get together and guess at the suitors and their fate.

On Vasily in the morning, young guys go from house to house and sow, while pronouncing special rhymes. They traditionally wish happiness, a successful harvest and prosperity to the owners of the house.
