In 1982 Kyiv celebrated its 1500th anniversary. On the occasion of this significant date, many monuments appeared in the capital, without which it is now difficult to imagine. One of the monuments planned for the opening was the "Rook" - a sculptural composition to the founders of Kyiv, which, according to the plan, was supposed to stand on top of a pillar on the Moscow bridge. However, the architects came to the conclusion that against the background of a 100-meter pylon, the composition would look small and difficult to notice, in addition, such an arrangement was dangerous. Therefore, a park was chosen as a new place for the installation of the "Rook" not far from one from the Pechersk Hills near the banks of the Dnieper. Significant for the city figures of Kyi, Shchek, Khoriv and Lybed appeared thanks to the sculptor Vasily Borodai and architect Nikolai Feshchenko. The legendary founders stand in the boat, looking into the distance, and their sister Lybid at the helm with outstretched arms, as if soaring in the sky, leads them forward. It is thanks to this view that the monument received the official name - "Soaring Lybid". In 2007, the area in front of the pedestal was cleared and ennobled, but the monument itself, without waiting for reconstruction, collapsed in the winter of 2010. A part of Lybid fell away and the figures of the brothers Shchek and Khoriv collapsed. The reason was the unreliability of the execution of the monument and improper care of it. In May of the same year, the figures were reconstructed and the renovated monument was inaugurated.
The boat and the figures of the founders of Kyiv are made of thin sheet copper and filled with cement inside. The height of the figures of the founding brothers is 4.3 meters, and Lybid is 3.8 meters. Kiy holds a bow in his hands, and Shchek and Khoriv have spears.
The swan stands with its back to the male figures, arms outstretched, as if imitating flight. The boat "floats" on cement waves, under which a granite pedestal is installed. Nearby are a fountain and a memorial stone with a quote from the chronicle about the history of the founding of Kyiv.
Vasily Boroday made the sculpture of Lybed look like his own daughter, the talented artist Galina Boroday, who died at a young age.
During the dismantling of the monument, a large hole was found in the figure of Lybid, formed due to rotting of the thin copper from which it was made. Thanks to this, the Kyiv homeless arranged a lodging for the night in Lybid.
After the wedding, the newlyweds come to the monument and leave flowers at it. Also, some believe that if you manage to throw a bouquet to the boat, turning your back on it, then the marriage will be happy and reliable.
In total, there are three monuments to its founders in Kyiv. In addition to the “Soaring Lybid”, it is also a sculpture-fountain on Khreshchatyk, and a “children's” monument to the founders, opened in 2017 on Poshtova Square.
