Maslenitsa in Ukraine has many different names, the most famous and common of which is Masnitsa. In some regions, there were also such names as Kolodiy, Zapusty, Puschenie, Zagovina, Cheese Week. Meat-fat Maslenitsa is called due to the fact that during the celebration they refrain from eating meat, cheese (curd) - because this week they eat a lot of cottage cheese, Maslenitsa - because they use a large amount of butter.
The center, east and south are celebrating "Masnitsa", which is also called Kolodki or Kolodey. In everyday life are also used: Conspiracies and Leg snags. "Masnitsa" is the same as Shrovetide, Fat, Fat Week in many cultures. Western regions of Ukraine call this week Start/Start, Syropust. Also, Maslenitsa is known for its Kolodya ritual, which was celebrated throughout Ukraine.

In fact, Maslenitsa is a pagan holiday, which was later changed by the Orthodox Church. Before that, people celebrated the Seeing of winter and the onset of spring, when our ancestors honored the sun as God. Then there was a tradition to bake round cakes, shaped like the sun. It was believed that by eating such a dish, a person would receive a particle of sunlight and heat. Over time, flat cakes were replaced with pancakes.

According to one version, dumplings were prepared for Maslenitsa in Ukraine, since this has long been a Ukrainian ritual dish. Of course, dumplings are historically more popular ritual dish for Ukrainians. This was due to the fact that the shape of the dumpling resembles the moon, and the beginning of Lent usually approximately begins near the day of the Spring equinox. In the last week before Lent, dumplings were prepared in various ways. One of the most popular is cheese dumplings baked with sour cream and butter.
