Shrovetide is an ancient Slavic holiday. Therefore, it has many traditions, rituals and beliefs. The appearance of Maslenitsa is associated with the pagan god Yarila.

The main idea of the Pancake week is to say goodbye to winter and meet the spring. Interestingly, in paganism, this holiday was celebrated not at the end of winter, but on the day of the vernal equinox. 🥰
In the church tradition Pancake week is called the Cheesefare Week. This is connected with the fact that during this week people can eat fish and dairy products, to prepare themselves for the beginning of Lent. Believers believe that in this way it is possible to cleanse the soul and body from negative energy. The Maslenitsa week ends with a special feast, which is called "Farewell Sunday.
