Maslenitsa is an ancient Slavic holiday. Therefore, it is distinguished by a large number of traditions, rituals and beliefs. The appearance of Maslenitsa is associated with the pagan god Yarila. In ancient times, people who lived on the territory of modern Ukraine sacrificed various straw effigies to higher powers. After Christianity was adopted here, the Church decided not to destroy the folk rituals, but to give them a new meaning. Today Shrovetide can be called a fun folk holiday.
The main idea of Maslenitsa is to spend winter and welcome spring. It is interesting that during paganism this holiday was celebrated not at all at the end of winter, but on the day of the spring equinox. In church tradition, Maslenitsa is called Cheese Week. This is due to the fact that this week it is allowed to eat fish and dairy products in order to prepare yourself for the beginning of Lent. Believers believe that this way you can cleanse the soul and body of negative energy. Shrovetide week ends with a special holiday called Forgiveness Sunday.
That is, the modern Maslenitsa has absorbed the traditions of many centuries, becoming exactly the holiday that we know today.
