Spring holiday cycle of ukrainians: traditions and rituals, part 2
id: 10048035

Easter falls on April 8 this year. Our ancestors prepared for this holiday throughout Holy Week: they cleaned the yards after the winter, whitewashed the huts, prepared festive pastries (Kulich), painted Easter eggs and made Easter eggs.

Pouring Monday (April 9). On this day, the guys tried to pour water on the girls they liked. The rite of dousing (cleansing with water) came from pagan times and symbolized the beauty, health and renewal of nature.

After Easter, the streets began: cheerful games of young people in nature, round dances. The streets usually gathered at a certain place (it was discussed in advance where exactly): on the Maidan in the center of the village, in the meadow, near the levada (everything depended on the village). The "streets" continued all summer until Semyon's Day (September 14). Before the beginning of the field work, the youth gathered every evening, but after they began - on Sundays and on holidays, when it was a sin to work. The festivities were fun: with music, dancing, songs, fun and games. "Street" was not only an opportunity to take a break from hard work, but also a place where people studied traditions, customs and relationships were born.
