Date of catholic easter - why it differs from orthodox
id: 10043712

The fact is that since the 16th century, the Orthodox and Catholic churches have been using different Paschals - methods for calculating Easter. Most Orthodox churches, including the OCU, use the vernal equinox (March 21) according to the old style to calculate the date of Easter, while Catholics use the new style.

In 2023, Catholics will celebrate Easter on April 9, and Orthodox believers on April 16.

Traditions and customs of Catholic Easter
Catholic Easter is different from Orthodox Easter in many ways. Differences begin with the preparation for the holiday. For Catholics, Lent 2023 lasts a week less, and its food restrictions are much more relaxed.

On Easter, Catholics attend the Easter service. In temples, a special fire is kindled for the holiday, as a symbol of light and hope that God gave to mankind. Believers light candles on this fire and carry them home.

Believers celebrate Catholic Easter with their families at a joint dinner. Painted multi-colored boiled eggs are placed on the table, as well as egg-shaped chocolates. Also for Easter, turkey or rabbit meat is prepared. Easter pastries, similar to Ukrainian paska, are rarely found among Catholics on a holiday.

The main symbol of Easter for Catholics is the Easter Bunny. According to legend, the animal brings a basket of chocolate eggs to every house and hides it in the house or in the yard.
