When is Mother's Day of the year in Ukraine and the world
No wonder the world created a special holiday in honor of mom - Mother's Day. In Ukraine, it is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday of May. In 2023, this important date falls on May 14th. It was introduced by decree of the President of Ukraine dated May 10, 1999.
In some other countries of the world, Mother's Day is celebrated annually on May 13th.

On this day, it is customary not only to give gifts to their mothers, but also to come to visit them, congratulate them with the help of postcards and warm words.
The history of mother's day: how and when this holiday appeared

The American Anna Jervis proposed to found such a holiday back in 1908. However, at that time the event was not as positive as it is today. Unfortunately, Anna's mother died prematurely, so the woman wanted the children to have a separate day when they could honor their mothers.
How Mother's Day is celebrated in Ukraine
Mother's Day began to be celebrated in 1999. Mom in our country has long been considered a real keeper of the hearth and exactly the person to whom children always come for a kind word, advice and help. And although Mother's Day officially appeared in Ukraine relatively recently, Ukrainians respect it much longer. For example, in Canada, the Ukrainian diaspora began to greet their mothers at the beginning of the 20th century (1928), and in the western regions of Ukraine such an initiative appeared a year after that.

On the second Sunday of May, concerts dedicated to mothers were traditionally held in Lviv. Under the Soviet regime, the holiday was banned and so it lasted for a very long time - until 1999. An interesting fact: in the days of Kievan Rus and the Cossacks there was a holiday - the day of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this day, it was customary to congratulate women, especially mothers.

Today, on Mother's Day, children show their relatives their respect and love. In her honor, they write poems, compose songs, give gifts and carry bouquets of fresh flowers.
