The celebration of Mother's Day in May was not chosen by chance - because this is the month in which the Most Pure Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, is honored. From time immemorial, women have turned to her in difficult moments of life, when help and patronage are needed. In addition, in the last month of spring, nature comes alive, fragrant flowers bloom around, and therefore it is the best time to congratulate the dearest person on Earth.
The history of the international Mother's Day begins with the United States. Back in 1908, the American Anna Jervis made a proposal to approve this holiday. The girl lost her mother early, and was very worried that she did not pay enough attention to her, so she decided to come up with a proposal to create such a holiday.
Anna wrote letters to state institutions, legislative bodies, prominent persons with a proposal to devote one day a year to the honoring of mothers. Her efforts were crowned with success - in 1910, the state of Virginia was the first to recognize Mother's Day as an official holiday. Since 1914, this holiday has received official status in the United States.
Back in 1929, the history of celebrating Mother's Day in Ukraine began. Then Lviv took up the initiative of Canadian Ukrainian women.
Since 1939, the Soviet authorities banned the celebration of Mother's Day. However, due to the efforts of various public organizations, this important holiday was returned to Ukraine in 1990.
