Vyshyvanka Day is a holiday designed to preserve and popularize the age-old traditions of creating and wearing ethnic embroidered Ukrainian clothing. The date of the event is the third Thursday of May every year. On this day, all those who want to, both in Ukraine and abroad, put on embroidered shirts and come to work or study with them.

The history of the holiday. The author of the idea of the Day of Vyshyvanka holiday is the writer and journalist Lesya Voronyuk, who in 2006, as a student of the Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations of the Yuriy Fedkovich Chernivtsi National University, invited her fellow students to come to the university in Vysyvankas on one day. And the impetus for the realization of the idea and the celebration was the embroidered shirt of one of the fellow students, which he regularly wore in pairs, like many other students. Lesya suggested that classmates and students choose one day and wear embroidered shirts together. At first, several dozens of students and several teachers of the faculty wore embroidered dresses. They were supported by colleagues from other universities, as well as libraries, schools, and kindergartens. In the following years, the action reached the all-Ukrainian, and therefore the international level.

The main purpose of the holiday is the preservation of Ukrainian national values and their popularization among youth and the general population. The holiday invites every Ukrainian to commit a simple act — to put on an embroidered shirt and go to work or study in it, emphasizing their involvement in the Ukrainian cultural tradition.

On this day, on the initiative of students, schoolchildren, public and cultural figures, concerts, embroidered marches, contests, parties, and fairs are held.

Traditionally, on the Day of National Clothing, interesting contests are organized on the Internet, for example, "The best embroidered shirt" or "The best photo in a embroidered shirt". Not only residents of Ukraine, but also Ukrainians abroad post photos in embroidered shirts on the Internet.
