More about flowers: Give uneven or odd numbers of roses. Yellow roses have negative connotations in some parts of Eastern Europe or with some people there. Flowers are a good gift for any woman. You will score extra points when you visit your lady for the first time if you bring flowers with you on the plane if you are meeting at the airport. Candy, small toys or especially balloons will be a big hit if there are any children in the home. Men like gadgets; i.e. a small multi-tool will often be well received. Bourbon, Scotch or brandy can be good choices for men too.

It is often good manners to take off your shoes at the entryway in most homes...vacuums are not common appliances. Pace yourself when eating with her family. Common practice is to serve multiple courses so you do not want to fill up too soon or too early. This is no time to be a picky eater. Try a little of everything. Russian/Ukrainian cuisine is excellent. Be careful not to praise too highly any of the family belongings...your hosts might be to give it to you. DO NOT talk about history, politics or religion. Do bring photos of you, your friends and family. Toasting is popular. Every third toast should have something to do with love or romance. HINT: the third toast is an excellent opportunity to praise the cooking, beauty, grace, or what have you with the women of the family. Do not try to keep pace with the alcohol consumption. In my experience, Americans will not win in a drinking contest nor will you shine in the eyes of your intended...if pertsovka is brought out it is deadly stuff.)))
