1. Remember time zones when asking someone to chat or call you.
Knowing time zones is extremely important. A person might have to work during that time, sleep, have meetings, attend church and so forth.
It's not like a man might not want to chat with you but isn't available at that time for some reason. So please do not get offended.
2. Make a list of questions you want to know the answers. My suggestion would be 4 simple and easy questions that anyone can answer. And reverse the question back to you . Make it questions of things you really need to know. Not simple questions like your favorite food.
Lean them on something personal. But requires a reasonable short reply.
3. Remember also you have a life with obligations and responsibilities as well just like he does.
4. Don't be afraid to ask him about holiday traditions he takes part in or his family. Then you maybe able to relate that event to one in your own life.
5. Remember there's a lot of similar holidays that are basically the same but are celebrated on completely different dates. A Ukrainian lady friend explained to me Christmas for her is Jan 6/7 not Dec 24/25 like celebrated else where. So here is a suggestion for you. Keep the Christmas tree up celebrate Christmas with his family. Then have your own personal private Christmas in Jan. Turn it into a romantic time.
6. Do not be disappointed if you do not have the same enthusiasm for the same holidays. Like here in the US New Year's Eve has really been changed radically over the last 30 years. With drinking and driving fines so expensive most people do a family thing or have just a few friends over. It's different every where so please ask him.
7. In the US we really do not celebrate woman's day like you do there. Instead we have Valentine's Day which is much like woman's day over there. But a month earlier.
8. You really want to know the man your talking to. Ask him about his parents and how was his parents relationship. And how his father truly treated his mother.
9. Now most of you have no comprehension how big the US is. 2.5 Europes will fit into the US. The main point is take the country of Ukraine is smaller than the state of Texas in far southern US. My point here is your references to cities and villages is vastly different than those in the US.
Very small cities could be less than 5000 people to large cities in the millions. Where a city in your view maybe 50,000 and up.
10. Ask about transportation and how he gets around. In the US most people drive and do not use public transportation.
11. Ask him how far the grocery store is from him and how large it is you will be shocked.
As for many people who come to the US for the first time say omg everything is so huge and I mean everything! Cars, homes, stores, you name it.
The other thing that shocks Europeans who come here is it's so easy to travel here. No papers, only 1 currency, 1 language just to name a few things my Ukrainian and Russian lady friends have said to me over the years.
