With the onset of December, a magical time of year begins in Ukraine, full of joy, comfort and, of course, holidays. One of the brightest and most beloved events is St. Nicholas Day, which is celebrated on December 19. I want to tell you about the traditions of this amazing holiday in our country.
The celebration itself begins on the evening of December 18, when children eagerly await the appearance of St. Nicholas. That evening they carefully clean their shoes, placing them by the door or under the window, waiting for the magic to happen. After all, at night it is Saint Nicholas, accompanied by his assistants, who comes into houses, filling them with childish delight!
Traditionally, Saint Nicholas brings gifts and sweets for children, as well as small gifts for adults. This could be tangerines, nuts, sweet treats and, of course, symbolic gifts in the form of toys and books. Such gifts become a symbol of the care and attention that St. Nicholas brings to each family member.
Parades and street events are an integral part of St. Nicholas Day celebrations. In many cities and villages, carnival processions are held, where people dress up in costumes of St. Nicholas and his helpers. Funny characters give out candy and treat passers-by with sweet treats, creating a festive mood on the streets.
Another great St. Nicholas Day tradition is preparing special treats. On this day, a variety of sweet dishes are served on the table - from traditional pies and Easter cakes to gingerbread and baked apples. Every family tries to prepare something special and tasty to share the joy of this holiday with loved ones.
However, in addition to fun and treats, St. Nicholas Day in Ukraine also has its own spiritual component. Many people attend church services to celebrate this holy day and give thanks for blessings and protection. For many families, this time also becomes an occasion for family gatherings and communication, memories and congratulations.
On this special day, Ukrainians also bring charity to nursing homes, hospitals and orphanages, showing care and attention to those who need special support. This action symbolizes not only the joy of the holiday, but also the spirit of mutual assistance and love that should accompany us throughout the year.
Thus, St. Nicholas Day in Ukraine is a time filled with warmth, love and care. This holiday not only brings joy to children, but also unites families, reminding us of the importance of spiritual values and mutual support. May this day be filled with happiness and magic for each of you!
With love and an open heart,
