Traditions of celebrating Christmas in Ukraine
Christmas is one of the main holidays in Ukraine. It symbolizes the birth of Jesus Christ, the savior of the world. The celebration of Christmas in Ukraine has a rich history and traditions that are passed down from generation to generation.
Holy Evening
The main event of Christmas in Ukraine is Holy Evening, which is celebrated on January 6. It is customary to fast on this day, and in the evening to gather the whole family at a festive table. There must be 12 lenten dishes on the table, symbolizing the 12 apostles. Among the traditional dishes of the Holy Evening are kutya (wheat or barley porridge with honey, nuts and poppy seeds), uzvar (dried fruit compote), borscht, cabbage rolls, dumplings and others.

Carols
After Holy Evening, Christmas week begins, during which it is customary to go caroling. Carols are Christmas songs performed by mummers dressed in various costumes. Carols tell about the birth of Jesus Christ and bring blessings and prosperity to the home of the owners.
The nativity scene
Another traditional Ukrainian Christmas tradition is the nativity scene. The nativity scene is a theatrical representation of the birth of Jesus Christ. Nativity scenes are usually placed in churches, as well as in houses.
Congratulations
At Christmas in Ukraine, it is customary to congratulate each other with the words "Christ was born!" and answer "Praise him!". It is also customary to give gifts.
