The path from dating to marriage is not an easy one, however, and the University of Michigan found that every third couple who met online breaks up within a year. Among the 4,000 couples who took part in the survey, those who met "traditionally" had stable relationships and were more likely to get married in the future.
Scientists suggest that the tendency for early breakups among couples who met online is explained by the fact that 86% of respondents doubted the veracity of the information provided in profiles on dating sites, and the loss of trust in the early stages of a relationship negatively affects its development.
They had good reason to doubt, because a study by the University of Wisconsin showed that 81% of online dating site users lie about their height, weight, and age. Women underestimated their weight by an average of 4 kg, while men increased their height by a couple of centimeters.
In addition, it is easier to meet online and, accordingly, it is easier and quicker to break up if something does not suit you. You must admit, it is much easier for an online character to write "I think we are not on the same page" than for your grandmother's best friend's grandson, to whom she introduced you.
Thus, today there are two conclusions - couples who meet online are likely to break up quickly, but if they do get married, then for a long time.
It is difficult to deduce patterns from situations that most often consist of emotions. But at least now it is clear that online dating has long ceased to be a marginalized practice, but a generally accepted way of communication.
