Today, it has turned into a fun tradition where candy is the grand prize for each house that opens the door to little ghosts and witches.
An important part of the holiday was the creation of “scary” pumpkins called Jack-o'-lanterns. This tradition dates back to the Irish legend of the cunning Jack, who tricked the devil and was cursed to wander forever in the dark with a coal inside his pumpkin. Now carving lanterns out of pumpkins has become an obligatory ritual: they serve not only as decoration, but also as a symbol of protection from evil spirits.
