It is deeply rooted in culture and traditions, and the celebration is accompanied by many customs that are passed down from generation to generation. In Ukraine, Christmas is celebrated according to both Western and Eastern rites, which creates a variety of traditions and customs in different regions of the country.
1. Christmas Eve and Holy Evening Meal: the magic of the festive table
One of the most important traditions is celebrating Christmas on Christmas Eve (the day before the holiday), which falls on January 6. On this day, the family gathers at the table for a holy dinner - Holy Evening Meal. This dinner symbolizes readiness to meet Christ and is one of the brightest and most exciting moments of the holiday.
Holy Evening Meal consists of 12 traditional dishes, symbolizing the 12 apostles. The main dish is kutia - a wheat porridge with honey, poppy seeds and nuts, which symbolizes life and fertility. In addition, there should be dishes on the table such as borscht, dumplings with potatoes or cabbage, mushroom soup, stewed cabbage, fish and, of course, uzvar - a compote of dried fruits.
Particular attention is paid to observing the fast: on the eve of Christmas, Ukrainians traditionally abstain from meat and dairy products in order to be ready to celebrate Holy Christmas.
2. Carols and nativity scenes: folk songs and theatrical performances
Carols are special Christmas songs that are sung on Christmas Eve. Carolers (usually children and young people) go from house to house with congratulations and wishes, and receive treats for this. An important point is not only the singing of songs, but also the tradition of holding a nativity scene - a theatrical performance telling the story of Christmas. Nativity scenes can be both outdoor and indoor, and the actors are adults and children.
Carolers wear traditional costumes: shepherds, angels, kings and other characters, and happily share the holiday atmosphere with others. Carols are not just songs, but also ritual texts that include prayers and blessings, as well as folk customs and beliefs.
3. Candles and decorations: the magic of fire and light
Light is an important element of Christmas traditions in Ukraine. One of the features is the Christmas candle, which is lit in every home, creating an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. Candles symbolize the light that came into the world with the birth of Jesus Christ. In some regions of Ukraine, it is customary to leave the windows open so that the spirits of ancestors can "visit" the house and bless the family.
Particular attention is paid to Christmas decorations. Often, pine branches, which serve as a symbol of life and rebirth, appear in homes, as well as a Christmas tree decorated with colorful toys, tinsel and lights. Christmas decorations often include images of angels, stars and other symbols of Christmas.
4. Festive day: church services and family traditions
On January 7, the day of Christmas itself, Ukrainians go to church for a festive service, which often begins with a morning service. On this day, festive liturgies are heard in churches, and believers pray for well-being and peace in the home.
After the service, the family gathers at the table, and the main celebration of Christmas begins. It is customary on this day to invite loved ones, relatives and friends, focusing on communication and shared joys. The festive dinner is also rich and varied - dishes may vary depending on the region, but the vegetarian nature of the table remains unchanged.
5. Generous Evening: Celebrating the Old New Year
For many Ukrainians, Christmas traditions do not end on January 7. The holiday continues until Generous Evening (January 13), when the Old New Year is celebrated. This day is marked by many interesting customs: "shchedrovki" (songs sung on this day), rituals associated with the harvest and prosperity in the new year, as well as various feasts. Generous Evening is no less an important event than Christmas Day itself.
Christmas traditions in Ukraine are not just a set of customs, but a living and multi-layered ritual that connects generation to generation, deeply immersing them in the atmosphere of celebration and spiritual renewal. These traditions embody the values of family, faith and mutual love, creating a unique and inimitable atmosphere that continues to live in the hearts of Ukrainians for centuries.
