When truth is power
Honesty builds trust. In relationships, be it friendship, love, or work, truth is the foundation. When people know that they can rely on your words, they feel safe around you.
For example, if a friend asks, “How do you like my new project?”, an honest answer (even if it is criticism) can help them grow. Telling the truth in such moments is a way to show respect for the person and their efforts.
When the truth hurts
However, there are situations when the truth can hurt. Let’s say that a friend tried very hard to make a cake, but it turned out badly. If you tell her, “This is the worst thing I have ever tried,” you will certainly offend her.
In such cases, the truth can be presented with gentleness or even temporarily kept silent. Instead of direct criticism, you can say: “I appreciate your efforts, let's try to find a new recipe together!”
A white lie or a deception?
Some people believe that a “white lie” is an acceptable form of defense. For example, should you tell a sick person that the prognosis is unfavorable? Or is it better to support his faith and hope?
The answer to such questions is not always clear. Perhaps it is important to consider what intentions are behind the words: are you telling the truth to help or to get rid of responsibility?
The balance between truth and kindness
I believe that it is important to find a middle ground. Be honest, but with understanding. Tell the truth, but in a way that does not hurt. It is not always easy, but it is this balance that makes us wise and sensitive people.
With love, Maria .
