1. Holy Evening and fasting.
Just before Christmas, Ukrainians celebrate Christmas Eve on January 6. This is the time when the whole family gathers at the table for a solemn dinner, which begins after the first star appears in the sky. On this day, fasting continues, so the food on the festive table should be fasting. One of the most important dishes is kutia, a sweet porridge made of wheat or rice with honey, poppy seeds, and nuts. It is eaten to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.
2. Koliadky and shchedrivky.
After dinner, when the table is cleared, children and adults go from house to house singing carols - songs that glorify the birth of the Savior. The carolers, usually dressed in traditional clothes, bring joy and blessings to each home, and the hosts give them treats. Depending on the region, shchedrivky, songs sung on New Year's Eve, may also be performed, symbolizing wishes for prosperity and happiness. Did you know that Shchedryk (Carol of the Bells) was written by a Ukrainian for this time of year?
3. The importance of family.
Regardless of how Christmas is celebrated in each particular household, the most important tradition is that it is always spent with family. In Ukraine, it is a time when all family members get together, exchange gifts and celebrate.
Christmas in Ukraine is a holiday with deep roots in folk traditions, community and spirituality. It is a time to remember the most important things in life - love, family and faith. May these traditions always live in our hearts and be passed down from generation to generation, preserving the warmth and magic of the Christmas season.
