In Ukraine, Christmas is celebrated twice - on December 25, as in most countries of the world, and on January 7 according to the Julian calendar. This makes our Christmas special and multi-layered. For most people, January 7 is the day when the whole family gathers to celebrate the greatness of the holiday.
Preparations for Christmas begin in advance. On the evening of January 6, the whole family gathers around the festive table for Sviatvechir - Christmas Eve, a traditional evening meal that consists of twelve courses. This symbolizes the twelve apostles. Among them there are kutya (sweet millet porridge with honey and nuts), uzvar - a compote of dried fruit. Each dish has its own meaning, and they must be in the house for this evening.
There is also a tradition of caroling on Svyatvechir. Carols are songs sung by children and adults while going around the house. Children come to the house with carols, and the owners give them sweets and money.
Christmas is not without fasting, which lasts for several weeks before the holiday. It is a time of reflection and preparation for the main event of the year. Holidays in Ukraine often begin with church services, in which not only adults, but also children participate, which makes the atmosphere even more solemn. NEW YEAR IN UKRAINE: WELCOMING THE YEAR WITH OPTIMISM As for the New Year, its celebration in Ukraine undoubtedly resembles European traditions. We decorate our houses with Christmas trees, create an atmosphere of magic and festivity. However, the peculiarity of our New Year is that we often meet it in the circle of our closest people - friends and family. Streets and houses are filled with lights, and on the tables there are not only traditional olivier and herring under a fur coat, but also many other dishes.
It is customary to give presents on New Year's Eve, and this process is no less exciting than the holiday itself. And, of course, we all wait for Santa Claus, who traditionally brings presents. WHAT REMAINS UNCHANGED: FAMILY TRADITIONS AND COZINESS
Holidays in Ukraine are, first of all, a time for family. Despite all the changes that are taking place in the world, Ukrainians still value the moments spent with loved ones. We do not forget about the traditions that are passed from generation to generation. This is the time when even in the cold winter there is warmth in the house, and joy and happiness overflow the hearts.
I hope that this story about holidays in Ukraine has created in you a feeling of warmth and cozy atmosphere. After all, Christmas and New Year are not only about what is happening on the street, but also about what is going on in our hearts. May these holidays bring you peace and joy, and only the best ahead!
