When is Christmas celebrated?
In Ukraine, Christmas is celebrated twice: on December 25 according to the Gregorian calendar and on January 7 according to the Julian calendar. Although in recent years the popularity of the Gregorian date has been growing, especially among young people and city dwellers, most Ukrainians traditionally celebrate on January 7.
Preparing for the holiday
Christmas preparations begin with Pylypyvka, a 40-day fast that ends on January 6, the day before Christmas. This day is called Svyatvecher, and it is dedicated to the purification of the soul and home. In the evening, the family gathers at the festive table, which is set with special reverence.
Holy Supper
Svyatvecher begins with the appearance of the first star in the sky - a symbol of the birth of Jesus. There should be 12 Lenten dishes on the table in honor of the apostles. The main ones are:
Kutya – sweet porridge made from wheat or rice with honey, poppy seeds and nuts.
Vareniks – usually with potatoes, cabbage or cherries.
Borscht with ears – traditional red borscht with small vareniki.
Cabbage rolls and various Lenten dishes made from vegetables and mushrooms.
The family prays and then begins the meal, starting with kutia.
Carols and Nativity Scene
One of the most beloved traditions is caroling. Children and adults go from house to house, singing carols – special Christmas songs, wishing the owners health, wealth and happiness. In gratitude, they are treated to sweets or money.
Another important element of the holiday is the Nativity Scene. This is a theatrical performance telling the story of the birth of Jesus. Artists often add modern elements and humor, making it even more exciting.
The magic of Christmas symbols
Didukh – a sheaf of wheat or oats, symbolizing ancestors, is placed in the corner of the house.
Mangers – symbolize the birthplace of Christ, often decorate churches and homes.
Candles and lamps – bring light and warmth to every home.
A holiday of faith and hope
Christmas in Ukraine is not only a family holiday, but also a time of deep spirituality. Many attend the night service in the church to hear the good news and receive a blessing.
Ukrainian Christmas is a holiday that unites generations, fills hearts with joy and reminds us that the most important things in life are love, faith and caring for each other.
