Advent and Preparing for the Holiday

Preparations for Christmas begin well before the day itself. This period includes fasting, allowing for reflection and spiritual renewal.

Homes are adorned with symbols and coziness: twinkling lights are placed in windows, and a Christmas tree is set up in the living room, decorated with childlike joy. Many families create handmade ornaments, imbuing the process with a deep spiritual significance.

Christmas Eve

Holy Evening is one of the most important events leading up to Christmas. Families gather around the table, which features 12 meatless dishes symbolizing the 12 apostles. The centerpiece is *kutya*, a dish made of wheat, honey, and poppy seeds. Kutya is considered a sacred dish, connecting the living with their ancestors and blessing the new year.

Prayers are recited at the table, followed by the singing of world-famous carols that fill the home. Caroling is a cherished tradition where adults and children visit neighbors and friends, sharing blessings, joy, and light through their songs and gestures of goodwill.

Preserving Traditions and Hoping for Peace

Despite the challenges Ukraine has faced, family and traditions remain a source of strength for the soul. Preparing for Christmas unites people, helping them hold onto hope for a better future and restoring inner resilience. 🥰🥰🥰
