Preparing for the Holiday
The festive mood begins well before Christmas itself. On January 6, the day before, believers observe a strict fast until the first star appears in the sky — a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem that announced the birth of Jesus Christ. This day, known as Christmas Eve (Sviatvechir), is marked by families preparing 12 meatless dishes symbolizing the 12 apostles. The centerpiece of the meal is kutia — a wheat or rice pudding made with honey, poppy seeds, and dried fruits.
Celebration Traditions
The celebrations on January 7 begin with attending church services. Morning liturgies are filled with joy and light, and festive hymns glorify the birth of the Savior. After the service, families gather at the holiday table to share the joy of Christmas with one another.
Ukrainians deeply preserve and pass down unique Christmas traditions, including:
- Koliada: Christmas caroling, performed by children and adults going door to door. Carolers bring the message of Christ’s birth, and in return, hosts reward them with sweets and money.
- Vertep: A nativity play that reenacts scenes from the Gospel. These performances often include elements of folk humor and satire.
- Didukh: A symbolic sheaf of wheat placed in the home during Christmas. It represents a connection with ancestors and brings prosperity to the household.
Christmas Across the Ages
In modern Ukraine, Christmas remains a vital part of cultural identity. Amid war and crises, the holiday takes on even greater significance as a time of hope and unity. Families come together to support one another, pray for peace, and wish for a brighter future.
Christmas in Changing Times
Since 2017, Ukraine has also celebrated Christmas on December 25 — Catholic Christmas — highlighting respect for diverse Christian traditions. However, for many Ukrainians, January 7 remains the main day of celebration, tied to centuries-old customs.
Conclusion
Christmas on January 7 in Ukraine is more than just a religious holiday. It is a time when the past, present, and future intertwine in a flow of love, light, and hope. May joyful carols fill every home, and may hearts be warmed with faith and the promise of a better tomorrow! 😇
