The origins of the holiday go back to Ancient Rome. It is believed that Valentine's Day is associated with the Christian martyr Valentine, who secretly married lovers despite the prohibition of Emperor Claudius II. According to legend, Valentine was executed on February 14 around 269. Later, the Catholic Church canonized him, and this day became associated with love.
There is also an opinion that Valentine's Day replaced the ancient Roman holiday of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on February 15 and was dedicated to fertility and marriage.
