How did their story begin?
When 26-year-old Napoleon met 33-year-old Josephine, he fell in love immediately. But she's not very good. Josephine, the widow of an aristocrat, was accustomed to a luxurious life, and the poor general seemed to her just an ambitious youth. But he didn't give up, and a year later he persuaded her to marry him.

But the irony of fate is that immediately after the wedding, Napoleon left for the Italian campaign, while Josephine stayed in Paris. That's how their long-distance love began, captured in hundreds of letters.

Napoleon wrote to Josephine almost every day. His messages contain violent emotions, jealousy and endless adoration.

Here is one of the most passionate passages.:

"You're not writing to me! Don't you love your husband? You know how much he loves you; can you safely not write to him? What kind of magic keeps you from giving him even a few lines? What could be more important to you than writing to your loved one?"

In other letters, Napoleon calls Josephine a "gentle lover," a "sorceress," and a "moody little savage." He begs her not to forget him, promises that he loves only her – and no one else.

But Josephine... is silent. Or he responds coldly.

There were lousy rumors about Josephine and these gossips broke Napoleon's heart, he was furious.

But when they met, all his anger evaporated. Josephine knew that if she looked at him with tenderness– he would forgive her everything.

The end of love – but not of feelings
Despite their crazy love, their marriage has not stood the test of time. Josephine was unable to give birth to Napoleon's heir, and he was forced to divorce her for the sake of a political union.

But even after the breakup, he wrote letters to her. And when Josephine died, Napoleon said:

๐Ÿ“œ "Josephine… my only love..."

Is it possible to fall in love by correspondence? yes
The story of Napoleon and Josephine shows how words can ignite passion, even if people are far apart. Napoleon loved her not only in life, but also in his letters, where the feelings sounded so vividly that even after centuries they stir the hearts.
