One of my biggest mistakes was being too dependent on my partner emotionally. I often put their needs and desires above my own, thinking that this was how I showed love. As a result, I lost myself, my interests and hobbies. This created tension, because I could not be real and open, and the relationship became more of a burden than a source of joy.
Over time, I realized that healthy relationships are based on mutual respect and independence. I learned to value my boundaries and not be afraid to defend them. I stopped thinking that in order to be loved, you need to constantly please another person. It is important to remain yourself and be ready for your partner to respect your personality too.
Another mistake I made was the desire to change my partner. I often believed that I could “re-educate” him or that he would eventually become the way I wanted. I did not accept him as he was and expected him to change under the influence of my ideals. This only led to disappointment and resentment.
Now I understand that relationships are not a project, and there is no need to try to remake a person. It is important to accept him with his peculiarities and not try to impose your ideas about what he should be like. This was a difficult but important realization.
Another important lesson is the ability to forgive and let go. I held on to grievances for a long time, thinking that this would make me stronger. But in fact, only forgiveness allows me to move on. When I learned to forgive not only others, but also myself, I felt relief and inner freedom.
