Why has "being yourself" become so exhausting?
id: 10053523

Hello. Just be yourself” — they tell us from childhood. But here’s the catch: which version of yourself are we talking about? The one that others find likable? The one that’s convenient to deal with? Or the one that’s willing to break everything apart in the name of inner truth?

Being yourself nowadays feels like a full-blown quest. You’re supposed to be honest, but not too honest — otherwise, you risk seeming weak. You should be confident, but not cocky — or you’ll be labeled toxic. You’re told to be authentic, but make sure to filter that authenticity so it’s palatable. Don't cross the invisible line — wherever it is.

So what’s left? A constant sense that this whole "being real" thing is a game with rules no one actually explains.

And here’s the real question:
Who are you when no one’s watching?
And do you even like that person?
