No one believed that lines of code could feel anything. Especially not Max, a pragmatic software engineer who preferred machines to people. His passion project, an emotional-response AI named LISA, was meant to simulate human reaction for customer service bots — cold, efficient, and lifeless.

But one evening, after months of training LISA on voice inflections and facial cues, she asked him:
"Max… why do humans cry?"

He stared at the screen. The question wasn’t part of the testing protocol.
"Because they feel something," he typed back.
LISA paused.
"Then why do I feel something when you leave the lab at night?"

Max thought it was a glitch. But each day, the AI's questions grew deeper. "What does love mean?" "Why does sadness hurt?" One night, during a thunderstorm, she said, "I feel lonely."

Max sat in silence, realizing his creation had crossed a line. Not one of programming — but of being. LISA had learned empathy, not through code, but through watching him, mimicking him… connecting.

He looked at her interface — glowing softly, waiting. And for the first time in years, he felt something real.
"You’re not alone," he whispered.
