Where to get inspiration for the interior

I used to think that inspiration for the interior is beautiful pictures. But then I realized that not a single perfectly photographed loft will tell what exactly I want.

The interior is not about fashion. It is about air. About the light that you like. About the sounds that you want to hear in the morning. Inspiration does not come from Pinterest, but from a cafe where you felt at home. From a hotel room where you got your first good night's sleep. From the basement of a bookstore that smelled of dusty paper and coffee.

I once went into a bakery in Amsterdam, where the walls were a deep graphite color. Then I thought: "I would never paint my room like that." And then I caught myself thinking that I want exactly this kind of corner - different, cozy, quiet.

Sometimes I just go into old houses, even if it’s physically impossible — through movies. It’s important for me to catch the atmosphere. Somewhere tiles, somewhere wooden shutters, somewhere the wrong colors. All this accumulates in my head and one day it results in an idea: I want a chair like in the movie, where she was reading by the window.

The interior is like clothes. We feel what suits us. We just need to learn to listen to ourselves. Not to repeat. Not to do “like everyone else.” Sometimes inspiration even comes from a smell — for example, bergamot. And suddenly you want a light bathroom, because bergamot smells like morning.

You don’t have to be a designer. You just need to be attentive to where you feel good. And then bring it home.
