I don’t believe in universal scents — everyone has their own “key” to memories. For me, scents are always associated with moments that I want to keep. Light citrus reminds me of summer mornings when the sun just touches my skin. Spicy vanilla — of long winter evenings and conversations until midnight.
Sometimes it’s enough to inhale someone’s perfume in a crowd to suddenly find yourself in a completely different time and place. A scent can take you back to a moment when you were happy, or, conversely, to something that is painful to remember. But there is still some magic in this: scents are more honest than any photographs, because they instantly awaken feelings.
I love it when the day starts with the smell of freshly brewed coffee and warm bread (yes, even if I don’t eat it). I love it when a light hint of someone else's perfume remains in my hair after a hug. I love it when the house smells of lavender - it always gives a feeling of calm.
Every day can be made special if you let in a scent that means something to you personally. And maybe it is the scent that will become that little anchor that will hold today in your memory.
